Genoa and La Spezia had never been administered by the center-right until five years ago, when with an exploit they managed to mark a historical page. Previously, Savona had also moved to the center-right and then returned to the left. Now, in the polls on June 12, the center-right is seeking confirmation of that exploit.
In Genoa, the challenge is played between “the man on the bridge”, the outgoing mayor-commissioner Marco Bucci, supported by a broad center-right coalition that also sees the endorsement of Italia Viva and Action, and Ariel Dello Strologo, lawyer and former president of the city’s Jewish community, candidate of a progressive and green center-left with Pd traction together with the 5 Star Movement. Bucci presents himself, polls in hand, as the big favorite and the goal is to win in the first round. The manager who returned from the United States, the one brought by the Lega and supported by Giovanni Toti, now shines with an independent light and, with the announced decline of the Carroccio party and the growth of Fratelli d’Italia, the count for leadership will also start in the center-right of the breakfast in which the civic list of the mayor could be the master. On the other side, progressives, albeit behind in the polls, are hoping for a ballot, especially by trying to convince the 50% of voters who did not go to vote in 2017. The return to the polls of this mega party could completely change the scenarios. In an attempt to undermine the image of the outgoing mayor, former premier Giuseppe Conte, who arrived in Genoa to support Ariel Dello Strologo, said: “Bucci did not build the bridge, it was an exaggeration to take all the credit. The M5s in the government has allowed that to happen “. On the other hand, the center-right is pushing precisely on the city of doing also in view of the 10 billion in loans that will arrive in the city, including Pnrr and other funds. “We want to make Genoa great, not to manage the decline”, Bucci’s slogan that in recent weeks he has repeatedly stressed: “You would manage this money to those who over the years have not been able to close a hole”, referring to the crater at the San Martino hospital where a parking lot has been built. “Broaden horizons, reduce distances”, is the slogan of his opponent who focuses on a more central role for the municipalities, on young policies, on neighborhood houses to link the suburbs to the Municipality. On the ballot paper also the name of Mattia Crucioli, former pentastellato senator, today of L’Alternativa is there, driven by a coalition that goes from Italexit and “no green pass” formations to Marco Rizzo’s PC. The picture is completed by Antonella Marras and Cinzia Ronzitti, candidates from radical left parties, the entrepreneur Carlo Carpi and the no vax Martino Manzano.
If in Genoa the center-right with Bucci can hope for a success in the first round, the same result appears difficult to achieve for colleague Pierluigi Peracchini. The center-left, after five years of center-right administration, will try to reverse the course. The outgoing mayor, Pierluigi Peracchini, managed to keep the center-right coalition compact by obtaining the support of Lista Toti, Lega, Fratelli d’Italia, Udc, Forza Italia, Liguria Popolare and civic lists, but he lost that of the former commissioner of Forza Italia Giovanni Grazzini, who took the field with a civic list and firm opponent of the outgoing mayor. Opposing Peracchini is above all the candidate from the progressive area, the lawyer Piera Sommovigo. Here, unlike Genoa, Italia Viva and Action have decided to compete with their candidates. Iv and Psi focus on Antonella Franciosi, the party of Calenda Andrea Buondonno.
