Almost ten years ago, on June 30, 2012, the Red Hot Chili Peppers were already the headliners at the Stade de France. At the time, their guitarist was named Josh Klinghoffer. This Friday 8 July, while the Saint-Denis arena is packed for the first of the two performances that the group will perform, the six-string goalkeeper is none other than John Frusciante, already in office from 1988 to 1992, then since since 1998 to 2009, before returning to his post in 2019.

And the long instrumental jam that kicks off the concert, with its long guitar solo, above all seems to be a way for the musician to proclaim that he is indeed back! Before a rumble from Flea’s bass announces the first real song, the hit “Around The World”.

Comments from Flea, Kiedis shirtless

At the stadium, the effervescence is immediately! Dance everywhere, on the lawn as well as in the stands. The sound, however, is not ideal, even swampy at times, punctuated by the drum rhythms of a Chad Smith literally unleashed this evening. Just like Flea, who lines up posture and goat jumps throughout the evening.

The singer, Anthony Kiedis, is dressed in a suit because he has the secret: red jacket, shorts with high socks, cap on his head and his face crossed by a big mustache. Finally, Frusciante is the more sober, preferring to keep his energies to deliver some always well-felt solos.

Because at his side, his friends bring a happy mess, as usual. Improvisations, comments (Flea asking: “Was there anyone present at the Grand Rex concert in 1988?”, The first given by the Americans in our capital, or later affirming, before “Pea”, “Pro choice”, in favor of right to abortion), extended introductions and even a short drum solo before the second real song, “Dani California”, Red Hot dare it all!

Kiedis quickly drops his jacket to stay shirtless, all the better for the front rows, the others enjoy the superb lighting effects used on some titles, with very psychedelic effects, sometimes it seems that multicolored lava flows are falling from the scene.

The new album, “Unlimited Love”, which was number 1 in sales in France, barely played tonight, only four titles, a little unnoticed amidst all the hits, except “These Are The Ways with enthusiasm, which Flea, decidedly talkative, defends himself by arguing that it is a “damn good song”.

But it must be recognized that, compared to “Suck My Kiss”, “Otherside”, “Soul To Squeeze”, “Californication” or the remarkable ending “Give It Away”, which provoke real crowd movements, the others headlines don’t fail to spark the same fervor. Not even the totally unexpected “Pea” from the damn album “One Hot Minute”, from which Red Hot hardly ever plays songs.

Final clown for the encore, Flea joins the stage walking on his hands! Not enough to affect her dexterity on the two remaining tracks, two mega-hits that ended up putting the approximately 80,000 people in a trance: “Under The Bridge” and “By The Way”.

In the end, probably not the band’s best performance in Paris, but not the worst either, thanks to a much more pronounced stage energy than ten years ago in the same venue, a real concert that lasts a while (1h50 this Friday night) . And a special mention to John Frusciante, who was right to come back!
