Faced with the outbreak of new contaminations in Europe, the European Commissioner for Health asks all over 60s to take a booster dose.

The Commission and the health agencies of the European Union have recommended on Monday 11 July a second booster dose of vaccines against Covid-19 for all over 60s, instead of 80 so far, in the face of the new “vast wave of ongoing cases.

I call on Member States to immediately offer a second booster to all over 60s and vulnerable people and call on all eligible people to come forward for vaccinationEuropean health commissioner Stella Kyriakides said.

Extended to all vulnerable people

The recommendation also applies to all vulnerable people, say the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in a joint press release. In April, the two EU health agencies had already recommended this second booster dose – in most cases the fourth dose – for those over 80, but they indicated that an extension to over 60 could follow.

Europe is copingan increase in Covid cases but also an upward trend in the number of hospitalizations or emergency hospitalizations in different countries, mainly due to the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron“, Underlined the director of the ECDC, Andrea Ammon, quoted in the statement. “This marks the beginning of a new widespread wave of Covid-19 across the European Union. There are still too many people at risk of serious Covid infection that we need to protect as soon as possible“, Insists the European official.

According to the latest data from the World Health Organization for its European area which covers about fifty countries, the number of Covid cases has been increasing sharply since the end of May. The number of new cases per day surpassed 675,000 on Friday, returning to the level of early April after the strong winter surge. According to the ECDC and the EMA, however, there is “there is no clear evidence at this stage to justify giving a second booster dose to people under 60 who are not at increased risk of developing a severe formof Covid-19.
