news culture Game of Thrones: the author of the books promises a different ending than the series
If the outcome of the Game of Thrones series has been controversial, the author of the original books does not necessarily intend to follow the same path. In a lengthy article posted on his site, George RR Martin provided surprising insights into what the final volumes of Game of Thrones have in store for us.
The author distances himself from the outcome of the series
George RR Martin is definitely putting on fans’ patience game of Thrones tense. The author has been writing the latest volumes of the Game of Thrones saga for over a decade: the winds of winter And A spring dream. But, as he recalls in a long article posted on his website, George RR Martin believes that there are two types of writers, architects and gardeners, and that he clearly belongs to the second category. Understand that the point of arrival of its history is still far from being definitively established and great upheavals are to be expected than the HBO series.
Another question I am often asked, especially since GAME OF THRONES ended on HBO, is whether A SONG OF ICE & FIRE will end the same way. An “architect” would be able to give a short, concise and simple answer to this question, but I am much more of a “gardener”. My stories grow, evolve and change as I write them. I usually know where I’m going, of course … the final destinations, the big pieces of the puzzle, I’ve had them in my head for years … decades, in the case of A SONG OF ICE & FUOCO. But there are a lot of devils in the details, and sometimes the ground shifts beneath my feet as the words come out. – Giorgio RR Martin
The author wishes to indicate to what extent the works go much further in complexity in dealing with the different characters.
What I’ve noticed more and more lately, though, is that my work is taking me further and further away from TV shows. Yes, some of the things you’ve seen on HBO in GAME OF THRONES, you’ll also see in THE WINDS OF WINTER (but maybe not the same way) … but the rest will be very different. And really, come to think of it, it was inevitable. The novels are much longer and much more complex than the series. Some things that happened on HBO won’t happen in the books. And viceversa. – Giorgio RR Martin
Surviving characters could die
George RR Martin wanted to warn fans of the series: some surviving Game of Thrones characters may die in the last volumes of the saga. And vice versa: those who had disappeared could very well be present until the end …
One thing I can say, in terms general enough not to spoil anything: not all characters who survived until the end of GAME OF THRONES will survive until the end of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE, and all characters who died in GAME OF THRONES will not. die in A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. (Some will, sure. Sure. Maybe most. But definitely not all) (Sure, I might change my mind again next week, with the next chapter I write. Gardening). It’s the end? You’ll have to wait for me to get there. Some things will be the same. Many will not. There is no doubt that once I’m done, there will be a lot of debate as to which version of the story is better. Some people will like my book, others will prefer the TV series. And that’s okay, you pay your money and make your choice. – Giorgio RR Martin
The fate of your favorite protagonists is therefore more than ever in the hands of the author of the saga who, better than anyone else, is aware of the heavy responsibility that rests on his shoulders. The reactions will likely be epidermal and visceral as when the series ended. but we never forget that a work belongs above all to its creator and that his choices, whatever they may be, can be debated but always deserve to be respected.
