Golda Meir, Israel’s First ‘Iron Lady’ and Grandmother

Born in 1998, Golda imposed herself in the 1940s ever more on the political scene when the beginnings of the creation of the State of Israel were announced. His commitment alongside David Ben-Gurion is important; together they found the party Mapai.

Comes on May 14, 1948. Golda Méirson is a member of the Provisional State Council of Israel and is as such the only woman signatory of the declaration of independence of the new State. The next day she receives her Israeli passport edited to go to the United States where David Ben Gurion sends her to collect funds. From her tour, she returns with 50 million dollars which allow the Hagana to finance her arms purchases in Prague. Because the USSR then supported politically and militarily the Jewish forces in Palestine. In September, Golda Méirson becomes Israel’s first ambassador to Moscow with the mission of cultivating this decisive alliance even as Stalinist repression descends on Soviet Jews…

Become Meïr, “brilliant shine”, she was appointed between 1949 and 1966, Minister of Labor, then of Foreign Affairs. In particular, it ensures Israel’s diplomatic breakthrough in Africa. But Golda Meïr is exhausted by the exercise of her responsibilities and decides to leave the government. However, the sudden death of Prime Minister Levi Eskhol in February 1969 and the rivalry between Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin pushed the Mapai or Labor Party to choose her as Prime Minister. Israelis love and trust him. Certainly, she embodies a strong and inflexible figure, the iron lady of Israel. But not for long… Because in 1971 she rejected Egyptian President Sadat’s peace proposal in exchange for the gift of Sinai… and wrongly ignored his warnings. On October 6, 1973, the Yom Kippur War broke out, it was to be expected. Golda Meïr is accused of not having launched a preventive attack… Faced with pressure, she resigns on November 11, 1974. She does not leave the image of a friendly and benevolent grandmother of Israel. But from the Ukrainian pogroms of her childhood to the harshness of the kibbutzim and then to the bitterness of the political battles, Golda Meïr remains the rugged and impregnable fortress of the land of milk and honey.
