What Is the Dollar General Penny List?
The Dollar General Penny List is a weekly roundup of products that scan for one cent at the register.
Why a penny? It’s an internal signal. When Dollar General discontinues an item or wants it off the sales floor, the price drops to $0.01 so staff know to pull it. Employees don’t always catch every one, so some of these items stay on the shelves, and shoppers who know the UPCs can pick them up.
Pro tip: Watch items marked 90% off. Clearance discounts get deeper over time, and many items at 90% off drop to a penny within a week or a few weeks.
Match everything exactly. Brand, flavor, size and count must all match the list. A 10-count box might be a penny while the 20-count version is full price.
Where to Find Penny Items in Your Store
There’s no special “penny aisle.” Penny items can be anywhere in the store, so plan to look around.
- Clearance sections and endcaps: the best place to start.
- Regular shelves: discontinued items often sit in their usual spot until they’re pulled.
- Top shelves and storage totes: items sometimes get tucked away up high.
- Seasonal areas: leftover seasonal products are common penny candidates.
- Freezer and cooler sections: especially this week, with so many freezer pops and ices on the list.
Penny Shopping Tips and Rules to Know
1. Know the store policy, but stay polite
Dollar General’s policy is widely reported to allow customers to buy items that ring up for a penny. Still, some stores or cashiers may refuse. If that happens, stay friendly. You can mention the policy calmly, and if they still say no, simply ask them to remove the item and move on.
2. Gather everything before checkout
You usually get one chance. If you buy one penny item and come back for more, staff may pull the rest from the shelf. Collect everything you want first, then check out once.
3. Don’t ask employees to find penny items
These are items employees are supposed to remove. Asking about them often means they’ll get pulled right away. Shop quietly, and avoid contacting corporate about penny items.
4. Watch for “penny resets”
A penny price only lasts until the item is restocked. When new inventory arrives, the system can reset the price to full retail, so older stock no longer rings up at a penny.
5. Scan with the Dollar General app first
The DG app (iOS and Android) has a price scanner.
- Update the app before you shop.
- Set your location to the store you’re visiting.
- Scan each item before you go to the register.
If prices haven’t updated on Tuesday morning, try again Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday.
6. Check back every week
We update this post each week with new penny items. You can also follow hashtags like #dollargeneralpennyitems, #dgpennyfinds, #dgdeals and #dgclearance on Instagram for real-time finds from other shoppers.
7. Don’t forget Dollar Tree
On weeks with few new DG penny items, Dollar Tree penny hunting can keep your savings going
